Cal Trask’s life was not defined by his family’s past—and neither is Zoe Kazan’s. As she adapted John Steinbeck’s novel East of Eden into a miniseries more than 70 years after her grandfather Elia Kazan released his 1955 movie, led by James Dean, she also separated herself from his legacy as a creative. And that meant asking Joseph Zada not to watch the movie before filming. "James Dean’s legacy is actually bigger than his body of work," Kazan exclusively told E! News at the East of Eden premiere in New York City Sept. 30. "He only made three films, sadly, but he’s a face that gets silk-screened on tote bags." The young actor—who received a posthumous Best Actor nomination at the 1956 Oscars for East of Eden—only earned starring roles in 1955’s Rebel Without a Cause and 1956’s Giant before he died in a car accident at age 24.
