Midway through “I Play Rocky,” Peter Farrelly’s misfire of a movie about Sylvester Stallone and the making of “Rocky,” production is underway on the film that would make its lead a star. But, despite them shooting a key emotional scene, things aren’t working. Sly (Anthony Ippolito) is pulled aside by the film’s director John Avildsen (Jay Duplass) and told he needs to dig deeper in the next take. There has to be something more, Avildsen says, that this is the moment where he’ll find the “thing,” the emotional why of the entire picture. Without it, the experience — even when the efforts of a dedicated crew moving heaven and Earth to make it work — will be empty. Unfortunately, while the real Sly found that emotional depth in “Rocky,” the fictional version of him, even when pushed, never does here.  Instead, what we get is a film that’s broadly crowd-pleasing, having fun with some playful jokes about filmmaking here and there, though without a cinematic soul it can call its own. It never uncovers that deeper “emotional why,” reducing the unconventional success story of Stallone to something aggressively conventional and without a greater emotional punch. Director Niki Byrne’s frustratingly melodramatic “The Julia Set” is a film that hints at complexity and nuance but often settles for the lowest common denominator in its execution. It has a lot to say but lacks the grace of easy digestion, unsure of how to move its story along without resorting to communicating its ideas in the most heavy-handed ways possible. It has a lot working for it, namely actors who are far too talented for the script they’ve been saddled with, but it all adds up to less than the sum of its parts.  I’ll confess that I had my doubts about how one could make mathematics cinematic, and at the start of Byrne’s film, she assuages fears in part by demonstrating how the language of the world runs on these concepts we often restrict to our classroom. The drama of our daily lives can be refracted through the language of theorems, proofs and algorithms, and it’s a language Julia (Chase Infiniti) knows well. She’s a student at university who can solve differential equations better than her whole class, yet has grown accustomed to making herself small so as not to draw attention. Anthony Ippolito was so excited to play Sylvester Stallone in a biopic about the making of “Rocky” that the up-and-coming actor shot an audition tape blindly, before he had even read a script or obtained sides. Ippolito stars as a young Stallone in Peter Farrelly’s “I Play Rocky,” which details the uphill battle to get “Rocky” made, which eventually won Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 1977. One of the buzziest titles this year at the festival, Ippolito said that he initially heard about the project through a news article and decided to take a shot before anyone even asked him to. “I hung a heavy bag in my grandma’s basement. I didn’t have a script, so I was just working with my imagination, trying to capture the physicality of the character,” Ippolito told Casey Loving at TheWrap’s studio at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival. Ippolito shot the audition tape with his friend, who is an aspiring director, and his cousin. “It kind of felt like a bit of a long shot, but it was a creative exercise, and it was actually really fun,” he added. If Paramount makes good on its threat to relocate out of California, the results would be devastating for the state and the entertainment industry, a leaked economic impact study finds. According to a study conducted by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation dated Sept. 10 (and leaked by Politico), once Paramount completed the entire relocation out of state, California would experience the permanent loss of approximately 28,990 to 57,980 full-time jobs statewide across all industries, and losses of between $10.6 billion and $21.2 billion annually in economic output. At minimum, the relocation would result in losses of 2,750 and 5,550 job-years in California across all industries and losses of between $1.01 billion and $2.03 billion in economic output between October 1, 2026, and September 30, 2031, according to the study. “It should be emphasized that these estimated job losses include direct, indirect, and induced jobs, capturing the ripple effects through Paramount’s supply chains in California as well as the economic activity of household spending,” the study says. “Consequently, the job losses pertain to all California industries rather than solely to motion picture and television production.” Additionally, the study finds that if Paramount holds to its promise to release 30…

The life and work of the late Palestinian American scholar Edward Said will never be fully captured in a single documentary. Not only are his writings too urgently influential and remain worth reading in their entirety 22 years after his death, but Said’s very existence was one that contains great multitudes. To condense that into even a dozen films, let alone just one, will inevitably mean losing much of both the man and the writer.  But if you’re going to try, one can only hope it looks like Maiken Baird’s thoughtful and admirably comprehensive “Edward Said: Between Worlds.” Hearing from Said in his own words as he takes us through decades of history and his place in it, the documentary is as rigorously detailed as it is moving and emotional. Rather than cut away to talking heads, it instead gives center stage over to Said so we can take in his own voice and writing. It’s a reverential work of resurrection, relying on archival footage and recordings of his various speeches that he gave over his life. Even though the filmmaking itself is rather cut-and-dry, Said’s words alone make this documentary resonate all the same.
