For months, the loudest “60 Minutes” story unfolded outside the broadcast. Sunday night, it spoke for itself. The Season 59 premiere was more evolution than revolution. CBS News editor in chief Bari Weiss and executive producer Nick Bilton refreshed the packaging without dismantling the formula. But its access-driven opener showed why independence questions persist. The 7:50 p.m. broadcast, delayed on the East and Central timezones by CBS’ NFL coverage, opened with its hardest test: Norah O’Donnell’s reconstruction of two U.S. Air Force officers’ rescue after their F-15E was shot down over Iran. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth tells 60 Minutes that news of a U.S. fighter jet being shot down over Iran woke him in the middle of the night. His first thought: “S***.” pic.twitter.com/8Dt1iqZ91G— 60 Minutes (@60Minutes) September 13, 2026 Pilot “Alpha” was rescued within six hours. Weapons systems officer “Bravo” landed five miles away with a damaged parachute and broken bones. “It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen,” Bravo said of looking up and seeing no parachute. He nevertheless climbed toward a 7,000-foot ridgeline as Iranian forces searched for him. Newly declassified footage showed his extraction. Interviews with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and commanders supplied remarkable access…

Note: This story contains spoilers from “Lanterns” Episode 5. “Lanterns” burned it all down in Episode 5, and there are still three hours left on the HBO show’s clock. Sunday’s installment brought Hal (Kyle Chandler) and John’s (Aaron Pierre) 2016 investigation into the Manhunter’s dealings in Rushville to an explosive head – all while things reached a point of no return for the Green Lantern and his trainee. Hal abandoned John to take on Zoe/Manhunter (Poorna Jagannathan) and Macon (Garrett Dillahunt) himself, all while Antaan (Paul Ben-Victor) arrived in town to throw a wrench in everything. Episode 5 director Geeta Vasant Patel told TheWrap that the fun from being a “semi-finale where there’s a lot of doors closed, and then a lot of doors opened” was in finding the character moments in the chaos, as Rushville was turned into a smoking ruin. “The marching orders are always to make sure that amid the action, there are emotional arcs happening,” Patel said. “The action is a given. However, to create action that really is no different than a dramatic scene is always a challenge in these situations when there is so much physicality, and there are explosions and things like that.…

There are few actresses as fearless as Léa Seydoux. She anchored controversial 2017 Cannes-winner “Blue Is the Warmest Color,” appeared in David Cronenberg’s abrasive “Crimes of the Future” and popped in for a pair of Wes Anderson wonders (“The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “The French Dispatch”), while also co-starring in giant Hollywood blockbusters – a “Dune” movie (“Dune: Part Two”), two 007 movies (“Spectre” and “No Time to Die”) and “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” At this year’s Toronto Film Festival she stars in “Gentle Monster,” a hot-button drama that premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and will be on Netflix later this year. In the film, Seydoux plays an experimental musician married to filmmaker (Laurence Rupp), who, following a psychological episode, relocates from Munich to the countryside. “But their bucolic idyll collapses when a sex crimes unit, led by officer Else Kühn (Jella Haase), arrives to seize the family’s digital devices — and to arrest Philip. As the case against him becomes increasingly difficult to deny, her attention shifts to her son Johnny — and the terrifying possibility that he might be involved,” reads the official TIFF program. Seydoux told Jada Yuan at TheWrap’s studio at the 2026…

Anyone who has ever been afflicted with, or known a loved one afflicted with, a life-altering disease knows the pain of unexpected illnesses. It’s often a loss of hope compounded with severe depression, medication side effects, and a dismissal of one’s humanity. Parkinson’s Disease can be debilitating, and when someone is diagnosed with the disease, it can be shocking, and it can change one’s perspective on life. That is the case for widower Tony (Rhys Ifans) and single mother Emma (Laura Linney) in director John Madden’s newest film about health and companionship, “Onwards and Sideways.” World premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival Sunday, the movie explores Tony and Emma’s intertwining lives as they both learn they have Parkinson’s at the same doctor’s office. They confide in each other about their surprise and dismay while waiting in an office filled with pamphlets and little hope. Initially strangers, the two find that knowing they each have “five good years left” can change the course of how they live their lives. Composer Emma joins a ballet group designed to help Parkinson’s patients cope with movement issues, giving her a sense of community with others in the same situation. Tony, an elementary school…

“Carrie” is coming back. A new adaptation of Stephen King’s novel is set to premiere next month on Prime Video. But those at the Toronto International Film Festival got a blood-curdling preview, when the first two episodes of the series, created by Mike Flanagan, were screened for audiences. This isn’t the first time the novel has been adapted, of course. Brian De Palma’s brilliant 1976 movie was not only a watershed horror movie but helped catapult King to the mainstream. The original was given a long-in-the-tooth sequel in 1999 as “The Rage: Carrie 2,” and the novel was adapted as a standalone feature twice more – in 2002 as a TV movie written by future “Hannibal” creator Bryan Fuller and in 2013 as a theatrical feature by Kimberly Pierce. There was also an ill-fated Broadway musical that debuted in 1988 and was revived off-Broadway in 2012. Flanagan told Jada Yuan at TheWrap’s TIFF studio that he too was unsure about yet another adaptation of King’s novel. (Flanagan had previously adapted King in the features “Gerald’s Game,” “Doctor Sleep” and “The Life of Chuck.”) The director said that Amazon was keen on doing something with the property once they obtained the…
