Antonio Banderas didn’t have a mask over his eyes about life in Los Angeles. In fact, after the ‘Mask of Zorro’ actor moved to the Malibu neighborhood in the ‘90s to be with his then-partner Melanie Griffith and her two kids Alexander Bauer, now 40, and Dakota Johnson, 36, he knew that his heart longed to one day return to his hometown of Málaga, Spain. “Those were beautiful, exciting years. But I always had this sense of provisionality that it was not going to last my whole life,” Banderas told People in an interview published Aug. 7. “I knew that Málaga was there, my hometown. I was not supposed to be in Malibu, but in Málaga.” Banderas and Griffith tied the knot in 1996 and welcomed their daughter Stella Banderas, 29, that same year. But after the couple’s divorce in 2015, the ‘Puss in Boots’ star suffered a near-fatal heart attack in 2017. So, Banderas—who earned a Tony nomination in 2003 for his lead role in the musical ‘Nine’—quit smoking, sold his private jet and did what he knew he was meant to do: move back to Málaga. Now, he lives there with his longtime girlfriend Nicole Kimpel and owns a not-for-profit theater called Teatro del Soho.
