‘The O.C.’ starring…Jon Cryer? It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Peter Gallagher portraying Sandy Cohen in the iconic series, but a few familiar faces auditioned to play the beloved public defender and surfing enthusiast. "Jon Cryer read for Sandy," creator Josh Schwartz shared with E! for ‘Greatest Year in Pop Culture: 2003,’ along with "some other members of the Brat Pack." Though Cryer didn’t make the Sandy Cohen cut, he did land the lead role of Alan Harper in CBS’s ‘Two and a Half Men,’ which premiered in September 2003, a month after ‘The O.C.’ debuted on Fox. As for the Cohen patriarch, that role was meant for Gallagher, whose stacked resume—which already included Robert Altman and Steven Soderbergh productions—more than impressed Schwartz. "Meeting Peter," Schwartz said, "having him read my dialogue for the first time was a huge thrill ’cause obviously he’d been in The Player and Soderbergh and he was an incredible actor." E! and Fandango are both part of the Versant Media family.
