The “14th” is a strange outlier in Ava DuVernay’s filmography. While it gestures at urgency akin to “Selma,” “When They See Us” and “Origin” — dramas exploring present political mores through prisms of the past — the director’s latest casts an academic net so wide as to be scattered in its telling. Where its pseudo-predecessor, the Netflix documentary “13th,” scrutinized mass incarceration, “14th” feels more fluid in its aims, circling the notion of Birthright Citizenship through numerous interview snippets, but seldom finding a grounding for this exploration in the present, until quite late into its runtime. The result is certainly educational and informative, but rarely does it feel as challenging or dramatically cogent as DuVernay’s previous work. In the process, it ends up more factual document than documentary cinema, but even its artistic aims enter the realm of doubt, given how it presents (and manipulates) archival images. The movie’s many flaws are hard to ignore, even though its lucid politics render it an important statement, as a work broadly speaking truth to power at a time when Hollywood finds itself consolidating under (and in favor of) dangerous regimes. According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, which first reported Kalshi’s plan to investigate, three small bets were placed before Zacharia’s appointment made headlines, positioning the users to make thousands in profit. It’s said one bet of $19 was placed around 10:43 p.m. Thursday evening. The bettor stands to be paid out $1,896.
