Zach Cregger is, once again, the belle of the ball. A year after “Weapons” exploded in theaters and catapulted Amy Madigan to an Oscar win, his Sony video game adaptation “Resident Evil” sprinted past expectations to open to $60 million this weekend — the highest opening in the IP’s eight-film history. With rave reviews and positive word of mouth, the film is on track to become more than profitable against its $75 million budget. But the big takeaway from the success of “Resident Evil” isn’t the reinvigoration of the franchise. It’s that Cregger is now a household name capable of putting butts in seats. The thrilling, funny and genuinely scary 95-minute film is largely devoid of mythology and deliberately steers clear of characters from the games. Instead, Cregger — who pitched his take on the project on a whim — crafted a straight survival journey following one character from Point A to Point Z, making the road as enjoyable (and terrifying) as possible. In other words, he made the ultimate popcorn movie. In David Fincher parlance (which seems fitting given his influence on the filmmaker), if “Weapons” was his “Seven,” then “Resident Evil” is Cregger’s “Panic Room.” The success of…

A24 dropped the official first trailer for Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” on Wednesday, and it somehow manages to reveal more and make this three-hour documentary seem more mysterious at the same time. The project was born when Holmes, the convicted fraudster and Theranos founder, invited Fielder to live with her, her partner and her two children in the month right before she went to prison to serve out her 11-year sentence, and document the whole experience. Fielder, whose specialty is uncomfortable comedy, is right at home with the evasive figure who seems incapable of being genuine. Or is that, in fact, her being genuine? Watch the trailer below. The film debuted to rave reviews at the Telluride Film Festival earlier this month, and plenty of those reviews are teased in the trailer with some mighty high praise coming from the pull quotes. Indeed, most critics who saw the film warned that it’s best to experience it as coldly as possible, and thankfully this trailer doesn’t so much reveal as it teases what to expect. Holmes entered prison in May 2023 and is serving out an over 11-year sentence stemming from her work…

On Monday, Paramount CEO David Ellison, taking a victory lap after securing a settlement that gives the go-ahead to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, told staff in a memo that the $110 billion combination would mean “more opportunity for our creatives, production crews and employees across the business, and more great entertainment for audiences everywhere.” A day later, protesters from the Block the Merger coalition held a rally in front of the Paramount lot, clearly skeptical about Ellison’s claims. “I am so disappointed and pissed off with these people who are playing with us like chess pieces,” said actress Frances Fisher, an active board member of SAG-AFTRA. Mark Ruffalo, a vocal critic of the merger, separately called the settlement a “huge win to Trump and his billionaire cronies,” while Jane Fonda said Ellison “sold people in the entertainment industry, as well as consumers of our creative work, down the river.” Another creative who spoke anonymously to TheWrap called the merger “a f–king nightmare.” That frustration underscores the sentiment of a large swath of Hollywood bracing for the ramifications of an industry-shaking combination between two legendary studios. And while both Ellison and California Attorney General Rob Bonta expressed confidence that the settlement…
Hondo is back. But more importantly, so is the theme song. Barry De Vorzon’s undeniable bop has been part of the “S.W.A.T.” DNA since the 1970s TV series, so it’s only fitting that the familiar music is there to raise the curtain on “S.W.A.T.: Exiles,” Sony’s continuation of the popular procedural that survived multiple cancellation attempts before CBS finally pulled the plug after eight seasons last spring. Debuting Friday on Starz, “Exiles” is being marketed by the studio as either a spinoff, a sequel or some combination of the two. But it’s actually a fairly transparent attempt to keep a valuable brand alive, even if it means keeping costs down by cutting bait with most of the original cast. Ronen Rubinstein, Lucy Barrett, Shemar Moore, Adain Bradley, Zyra Gorecki and Freddy Miyares in “S.W.A.T. Exiles.” (Kit Karzen/Sony Pictures Television) That makes for an awkward, maybe even alienating, balancing act. There’s not enough new here to make “S.W.A.T.: Exiles” feel meaningfully different from “S.W.A.T.,” but just enough has changed to make us miss the faces we’d grown to know and care about during the previous show’s near-decade run. When last we saw Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson (Shemar Moore), he was still leading…
