“Not only did Paramount leak the alleged substance of settlement discussions, but they misrepresented these discussions, demonstrating a lack of good faith,” says Rob Bonta.
Following more than a month of indirect verbal sparring via media appearances and press releases, Paramount’s legal team and California Attorney General Rob Bonta were finally poised to discuss terms face to face on Monday. That is, until Bonta canceled the talks late Sunday, accusing Paramount of leaking details of the agenda and noting he’s happy to meet once the company “stops playing games and engages sincerely.” So no Monday meeting, but settlement talks seem inevitable at this point, sooner or later. Who’s entering the room with the most leverage? After all, this is turning into the mother of all high-stakes poker games. Paramount is keen to wrap this lawsuit up and close the $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery before its $7 million daily “ticking fee” kicks in on Oct. 1. Bonta, whose lawsuit filed alongside 11 other attorneys general and the Writers Guild of America is the only obstacle standing in the way of the deal closing, is under immense pressure from industry leaders and his own boss, Gov. Gavin Newsom, to find a resolution. “Legally, the states have the leverage,” said Braden Perry, a regulatory and government investigations attorney. “Politically, Paramount does.” Paramount CEO David Ellison…

Karen Attiah must be reinstated by The Washington Post and receive back pay after an arbitrator ruled the newspaper lacked sufficient cause to fire the opinion columnist over her social media posts following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Arbitrator Sarah Miller Espinosa found the Post “did not have good and sufficient cause” to terminate Attiah and failed to establish that she engaged in “gross misconduct,” according to a decision obtained by The New York Times. Attiah was fired by the Post in September after posting about Kirk’s killing on Bluesky. “This decision confirms what we’ve said from the start: I was doing my job as an opinion writer, and this was wrongful termination,” Attiah said in a statement, adding that she was “relieved to finally have that record set straight.” Attiah told the Times that she was “willing to go back” to the Post, which she called “one of the world’s most storied newspapers.” A Washington Post spokeswoman told the Times that the company respects the arbitration process and declined to comment further. Attiah was fired after posting on Bluesky about the reaction to Kirk’s assassination. In one post, she wrote, “Refusing to tear my clothes and smear…

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has canceled his office’s Monday settlement meeting with Paramount, accusing the studio of leaking details of their impending discussions and acting in bad faith. “Not only did Paramount leak the alleged substance of settlement discussions, but they misrepresented these discussions, demonstrating a lack of good faith,” Bonta said in a statement. “As soon as Paramount stops playing games and engages sincerely, my office is happy to meet again.” Representatives from Paramount were scheduled to meet with the California AG’s office on Monday to discuss a potential settlement of the latter’s antitrust suit seeking to block the David Ellison-led media giant’s takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery, an individual familiar with the matter previously told TheWrap. Bonta is one of 12 state attorneys general who sued to block the $110 billion merger, with a trial alongside the Writers Guild of America set for March. Starting Oct. 1, Ellison must start paying a 25 cent per share ticking fee, which would translate to a payout of $650 million per quarter or $7 million per day until the deal closes. The now-scrapped meeting was only announced on Friday, following public pressure from figures such as California Gov. Gavin Newsom…
