Christopher Nolan isn’t banning Uggs because he dislikes them—he’s doing it to protect the magic of moviemaking. While appearing on ‘CBS Mornings’ July 20 to promote his blockbuster film, ‘The Odyssey,’ the Oscar-winning director explained to Gayle King why the cozy boots are not allowed on his sets. Nolan compared sporting Uggs during filming to seeing someone “eating a bag of chips off camera,” asserting that certain everyday items can pull actors out of the immersive worlds they are trying to create. The ‘Oppenheimer’ director was quick to clarify that he actually thinks Uggs are “great,” insisting the ban is purely about maintaining the illusion on set. According to Rotten Tomatoes, ‘The Odyssey’—starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron—earned $124.5 million in its opening weekend, making it the biggest debut for a live-action film so far this year.
