The training program that turned the Top Gun: Maverick cast into IMAX-camera-operating fighter pilots was designed by an actor, not by the U.S. Navy. Tom Cruise has been a licensed pilot since 1994. He owns at least six aircraft, including a P-51 Mustang from World War II, a Gulfstream IV, and a Citation X. He has flown solo across continents. By the time Top Gun: Maverick went into production in 2018, he had logged more total hours in non-commercial aircraft than several of the Navy pilots assigned to the film. The training program for the cast was a personal Cruise project, three months long, progressively scaled. Cessna 172 first. Then aerobatic propeller planes. Then the L-39 Albatros, a Czech military trainer. Then F/A-18 Super Hornets pulling actual 8G with Navy pilots up front. The pilots filming were Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, and the rest of the new Top Gun cast. They had to handle the cameras themselves because no crew member could fit in the cockpit with them.
The cameras were custom-built six-rig IMAX setups, three on the actor and three on the canopy view, with self-contained lighting. The actors had to operate the cameras, control their breathing under G-forces, deliver dialogue, and stay on their compositions for cinematographer Claudio Miranda while the F/A-18 was pulling maneuvers their bodies had been trained for over three months. No one in the cast had done any of this before, and there was no Plan B if any actor failed to develop the necessary tolerance. The Navy’s initial position was no. They had never allowed non-pilot civilians in F/A-18 backseats during filming. The negotiations took two years. The final agreement required the actors to be qualified to operate aircraft systems independently because no Navy crew could be aboard to help if something went wrong. That negotiation was led by Cruise, not by the studio.
He was the credible party. He could speak to flight officers in their own technical vocabulary. He understood G-tolerance training, ejection seat protocols, and oxygen system management. The Navy had been talking to him about flight training for thirty years. Maverick grossed $1.5 billion worldwide. What I keep coming back to is that the actor who made the film is structurally irreplaceable in a way no other star in modern Hollywood is. The films Cruise makes require capabilities only he and the people he has trained have. He has been engineering production environments around his own physical credentials for three decades. At 63, he is still shooting films in conditions that would be uninsurable for any other actor and unfilmable on any other production. Whether anyone in the next generation of actors is on a comparable trajectory is a question with no obvious yes.
