The first-ever FIFA World Cup halftime show made history, but not because of massive performer paychecks. Global Citizen and FIFA confirmed to E! News that the show’s co-headliners—Shakira, Justin Bieber, BTS, Madonna and Chris Martin—were not paid performance fees. So why take the stage? The global exposure often leads to a major boost in streams, sales and visibility, but the performance also goes beyond the spotlight. In an Instagram post shared May 14, Global Citizen and FIFA announced that the halftime show would help support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, a charity that raises money to expand access to education and soccer for children around the world. After releasing her World Cup anthem “Dai Dai” earlier this year, Shakira told People that the song is “a message for every child who’s been told that their dream is too big,” adding that every champion starts as a kid who simply had someone believe in them.
