Ahead of its film festival premiere, TheWrap has the exclusive fist look at “Godmother,” an independently produced and financed horror feature from creators Alanah Pearce (684,000 YouTube subscribers) and Sean McLoughlin, aka Jacksepticeye (31.2 million YouTube subscribers). This upcoming movies continues the trend of creators expanding into independent feature filmmaking and financing, much like what Mark Fischbach, aka Markiplier, did with “Iron Lung.” “Godmother” is directed by John Veron and written by both Veron and Pearce. Pearce also produces the movie through her production company, Charred Pictures, and McLoughlin executive produces. McLoughlin personally financed principal photography for the movie, and Helmstreet Pictures funded post-production. Inspired by “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Return of the Living Dead,” “Godmother” follows a young woman named Theo in her late 20s (Paige Evans) who heads into the desert for a romantic weekend with her tech bro boyfriend (Cameron Cuffe) as well as her tagalong sister (Riley Dandy). But when they arrive at their vacation rental, they’re greeted by a couple (Dee Wallace and Bruce Davison) who seems far too eager to meet Theo. The resulting horror movie promises to have bloody betrayals, home-made torture chambers and frenzied elderly people as it tells the story of…

John Oliver has officially lived out his soap opera dreams, and on Sunday night’s episode of “Last Week Tonight,” he promptly roasted his performances. After begging to be cast in a soap opera earlier this year, the HBO host was actually cast in two, earning guest starring arcs on “General Hospital” and “Days of Our Lives.” Now that both shows have aired, Oliver mourned that his “hot soap summer is over,” and made sure to regale his audience with how everything went down, beginning “General Hospital.” “That’s right, I got to act while sporting hair that looks like if L’Oréal sold a color called ‘Mid-Life Crisis Black,’” Oliver joked, pulling up a photo of his character. That said, he applauded and thanked “General Hospital” for meeting all his requirements for a guest role, including having his character get slapped by a soap opera legend. Naturally, Oliver played the scene for the crowd, and was stoked when it ended. “Yes! Yes! That had everything!” he bellowed happily. “A slap, a dramatic close-up, and me doing a voice so wrong, it’s genuinely embarrassing.” Said voice was simply Oliver’s attempt at an American accent, telling his co-star that “That ain’t gonna happen.” It…
Hayden Panettiere expressed hopes for her and ex Wladimir Klitschko’s daughter Kaya before the actress’ tragic death at age 36 Aug. 16. “I started getting calls from my 11-year-old being interested in the industry so that’s more of a nail-biter,” Panettiere shared in an interview with E! News in May. “I always want to support whatever she wants to do but I am trying to guide her toward, ‘Let’s not rush into anything.’” Indeed, while Panettiere started her career as an actor at just 11 months old, she had a different trajectory in mind for her daughter. “‘Why don’t you try a few things out and have a college experience,’” Panettiere recalled telling her. “She still has the ability to fly under the radar and once you give that up you don’t get it back. Once you’re out there and you’re famous and known, there is no getting your privacy back.” Panettiere was pronounced dead in Greenville, South Carolina , just before 2 p.m. local time on Aug. 16, after police and Emergency Medical Services responded to a report of an "unresponsive female." Her cause of death has not yet been shared. #enews #haydenpanettiere #investigation #death About: The E! News…

Underneath Hayden’s final Instagram post shared in July, Selma Blair wrote, "I love you. Don’t be gone. Don’t be gone. Please. Please.” Viola Davis, who starred alongside Hayden in 2016’s ‘Custody’ wrote in her Aug. 17 Instagram post, “I wish the world had more time with you because I had a burning curiosity about who you were becoming. I saw this beautiful Phoenix rising from the ashes. Your tests became your testimony, and your testimony became your legacy.” While announcing the news of his daughter’s death in an Aug. 16 statement to ABC News, Skip Panettiere asked for privacy so that he and his family could “process this unimaginable loss." #enews #haydenpanettiere #investigation #death About: The E! President Trump apparently hid in an airport catering cart to pull off a plane switch in Turkey after a NATO Summit last month, and on Sunday night, John Oliver joined in with other late night hosts mocking him for it. But, for Oliver’s part, he only saw one real issue with the move. According to The Washington Post, Trump switched planes due to security concerns, and did so by sneaking out a side door and riding in a catering cart to a smaller plane. “Fantastic! The only problem I can see there is, next time he needs to escape, he’s not going to be able to use the catering truck trick again, because everyone knows about it now,” Oliver said. “People are going to be suspicious from now on if they see a plane go one way, a catering truck go another, and an enormous man-sized cake get wheeled away by two suspiciously jacked chefs.” Oliver was just the latest to poke fun at Trump’s stunt, with “The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon using his monologue on August 12 to imagine the endless questions Trump probably asked while inside the cart. Meanwhile, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” guest host Anthony Anderson was…

The Motion Picture Association and ByteDance have worked together to produce global artificial intelligence guardrails to protect intellectual property on TikTok, the companies announced on Monday. Their new memorandum of understanding offers a framework for how generative AI video and image models across TikTok, the TikTok USDS joint venture, CapCut and Dreamina can pull from existing film and TV properties. “Today’s agreement illustrates our belief that copyright is a cornerstone of the film and television industry – and reinforces our commitment to protect creative content,” MPA chairman/CEO Charles Rivkin said in a statement. “For the past several months, we have had constructive engagement with ByteDance to implement meaningful guardrails on Seedance and Seedream, and this MOU reflects our shared determination to continue our work together to further fortify those guardrails.” “ByteDance respects the intellectual property rights that underpin creative industries around the world, and we believe responsible innovation in AI goes hand in hand with meaningful protections for rightsholders,” John Rogovin, General Counsel for ByteDance, added. “We appreciate the productive engagement with the MPA and its members as we continue to strengthen safeguards across our generative AI services. This MOU establishes an important framework for continued collaboration as the technology evolves, across a variety of products and platforms.” The…

The upcoming set of episodes for the political thriller will explore tensions in a number of domestic and international relationships.
Welcome back to the “Media Front.” New York Magazine set out this week to document a cultural shift in its city. By Friday, choices about how to document that shift had become a media story of their own. “Habibi City,” New York’s package on the growing cultural and political influence of New Yorkers with roots in the Middle East and North Africa, explored everything from restaurants and nightlife to comedy and politics. Its centerpiece described a community that has become more visible and interconnected in recent years, particularly amid the war in Gaza and the rise of Mayor Zohran Mamdani. But much of the reaction focused less on the trend New York was documenting than on how the magazine framed it. Those choices quickly became the focus of a broader media debate. The New York Post published multiple pieces attacking the package, while The Free Press published a response from Liel Leibovitz arguing that New York’s portrayal of the city and its Middle Eastern communities was fundamentally misguided. The Washington Free Beacon also weighed in repeatedly, including with a follow-up criticizing New York’s response to the controversy. The reaction shows how quickly an ambitious piece of cultural journalism can turn the lens back on the…

If you’ve never visited D23, the once-every-two-years celebration of all things Disney, calling it Disney’s version of Comic-Con is an understatement. The world’s biggest entertainment conglomerate takes over the Anaheim Convention Center, just steps away from Disneyland, the company’s first theme park and still its crown jewel, to showcase all that Disney has to offer – to celebrate its past, highlight its present and preview its future – and the faithful fans, dressed in cosplay as theme park characters or their favorite Imagineer, pay handsomely for the privilege (three-day tickets, with access to the Honda Center, ranged from $297 to $957 depending on your seats within the Honda Center; the Ultimate Fan Pass started at $1,299). At the last D23, named after the official Disney fan club (1923 was the year Walt founded the company), the convention broke containment and spilled out into the nearby Honda Center, where the Anaheim Ducks (once owned by the Walt Disney Co. during the halcyon Michael Eisner days) play. With its more than 14,000 seats and separate ticket for panels on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, it was a massive, hugely lucrative expansion that carried into this year, with events in the Honda Center on…
