Prestige drama is great and all, but with everything going on in the world right now, there’s a growing market for escapist series with familiar storylines, epic love triangles and gorgeous scenery. Enter Netflix’s newest YA entry, “Crew Girl.” The eight-episode series breathes life into Vivian Lin’s vision of a female single sculls rower on the D1 scholarship track, only to be sidelined by her father’s financial crimes. Miku Martineau stars as the rower in question, Teagan Tao, who moves with her mother, Ella (Jessica Paré), from California to the fictional town of Eagle’s Cove, Massachusetts, to recover. With fudge and seafood serving as the main attractions, the action takes place at the prep school. There, the boys’ rowing team stirs up a world of drama. It’s a classic coming-of-age story as Teagan loses everything and starts over, unable to get her frustrations out on the water due to a lack of a female rowing team. With the boys’ squad struggling, she soon finds her calling, though, proving she’s the thing this team has been missing. Ella Langley led the 60th Annual CMA Awards with nine nominations in part to her record-breaking hit “Choosing Texas.” The country music hit has spent 21 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, moving her one week closer to beating Mariah Carey’s record for most weeks spent at the top of the chart for “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Other top nominees include Miranda Lambert with seven nominations and Kacey Musgraves and Ben West with five nominations each. “For six decades, the CMA Awards have celebrated excellence in Country Music,” Sarah Trahern, CMA chief executive officer, said. “We’re grateful to CMA’s Professional members, whose collective voice determines every nomination, bringing real expertise to the balloting process each year. Congratulations to all of this year’s deserving nominees. We cannot wait to celebrate our milestone anniversary together in November.” Luke Combs, Cody Johnson, Langley, Chris Stapleton and Lainey Wilson will all compete for the night’s top honor of Entertainer of the Year. The nominees are determined by CMA’s 7,083 voting-eligible professional members, spanning the country music landscape. This year’s nominees were revealed first on “Good Morning America” and livestreamed on CMA’s official YouTube channel. The 60th Annual CMA…

After 700 pages of eligible contenders, 120 categories of nominees and more than five hours of awards shows last weekend, it’s down to this: 19 remaining categories and 113 nominees hoping to go home victorious at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards. The nominations were wild and, at times, contradictory, with a pair of previous winners, the medical drama “The Pitt” and the showbiz comedy “Hacks,” leading the way with 25 and 24 nominations, respectively. Both seemed to be facing serious threats from bold new shows, with the dystopian future of “Pluribus” and the creepy comedy of “Widow’s Bay” coming on strong. And in the limited series category, things were all over the map, with contenders including a controversial real-life chronicle, “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette,” the second season of the black comedy “Beef” and a twisty mystery set in the world of a kinky hookup app for would-be cheaters, “DTF St. Louis.” We expect all of those to take home awards on Monday at the Peacock Theater. But based on what we saw at the two Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies on Sept. 5 and 6, the momentum seems to be with “The Pitt,” “Widow’s Bay” and…

When it comes to artificial intelligence, the debate over whether AI “will kill us all” is less relevant than asking why it’s taking so long for someone to do something about it. The notion that AI poses an existential threat isn’t new — “Terminator 2” called it back in 1991 — but warnings from some of the people working on these AI systems have dragged this threat into reality. The latest red flag was raised on Tuesday, when Anthropic AI researcher Jacob Coxon said on X that he had resigned from the company and claimed “the people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.” While raising the potential existential threat of AI is laudable, it misses the point of what this ecosystem really needs: oversight. For all the talk of AI regulations and safeguards needed in financial services, healthcare and, of course, in Hollywood, there’s less discussion about oversight for the companies building the AI models themselves. “We spend enormous amounts of time discussing how enterprises should govern AI, yet very little time asking how society should govern the organizations creating the AI itself,” Frost & Sullivan analyst Dilip Sarangan said…
