Issa Rae is plotting her return to HBO. The “Insecure” creator received a pilot order for a new half-hour comedy series centered around male friendship, TheWrap has learned. The untitled series follows “Menzel, a 30-year-old barber, aspiring sports manager, and professional best friend to JB, an up-and-coming boxer, as they navigate ambition, insecurity, loneliness, and the double-edged sword of success within the high-stakes world of professional boxing in Las Vegas,” per the official logline. Rae, who wrote and executive produced the show, reunites with “Insecure” collaborator Prentice Penny for the new project. He is tapped to direct the pilot and serve as showrunner and executive producer. This marks Rae’s fourth collaboration with HBO after the Emmy-winning “Insecure,” the comedy “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and the music industry comedy “Rap Sh!t” for HBO Max. And Janus Films and Criterion have just acquired all North American rights to the project. “Cameron Winter at Carnegie Hall,” which documents the Geese lead singer’s solo show at Carnegie Hall after months of touring with his band in December 2025, will begin an exclusive North American 35mm tour on Nov. 20. The prints will be made by FotoKem in Los Angeles and supervised by the filmmakers. The show was captured on 35mm and 16mm film. The music was recorded and produced for the film (and a previously announced live album, out Oct. 9) by music producer Ariel Rechtshaid. The film was co-produced by Benny Safdie and produced by Sara Murphy, Erica Frauman and Maggie Ambrose. Ad-supported broadcast TV viewership increased 0.6% year over year to 26.6% during the second quarter of 2026, stabilized by sports programming such as the NBA playoffs and the FIFA World Cup. While the category experienced a seasonal decline of 1.6 share points from the first quarter, it was softer than the same period a year ago. Meanwhile, streaming climbed 1.6 share points to 48.2% of ad-supported TV viewing, while cable held steady at 25.2%. When focusing solely on viewers ages 18 and older, streaming fell 3.8 share points to 44.4%, while broadcast was boosted 2 share points to 28.6% and cable climbed 1.8 points to 27%. Overall, ad-supported TV captured a viewership share of 71.5% during the second quarter of 2026, a 1.3 share point decline from the first quarter, while non-ad supported TV made up the remaining 28.5%, up slightly from 27.2% in the previous quarter. Alexi Hawley extended his overall deal with Lionsgate Television, signing a new multi-year agreement. Under the new deal, the series creator will continue to expand “The Rookie” franchise among other creative endeavors. Hawley first signed a deal with the studio in 2024 as “The Rookie” grew into a broadcast hit. It generated more than 12.8 billion minutes of viewing in the first half of 2026. “The Rookie” Season 9 is set to premiere on ABC in early 2027, and the franchise is continuing to expand.
