OpenAI confirmed Monday that it would not release the newest AI model, called GPT-6.1 Astra, after it “didn’t quite meet the bar” for safety. The company’s confirmation came after the Wall Street Journal reported earlier on Monday that the release of GPT-6.1 Astra had been scrapped ahead of its planned October debut. OpenAI previously described the Astra model as “state-of-the-art on computer use, browsing, professional work, software engineering, cybersecurity and science.” However, in a statement to media, Saachi Jain, OpenAI’s head of safety systems, explained that the new model showed what the company viewed as high levels of deception. Additionally, it’s said the model was willing to go beyond what it was originally asked to do, notably not checking back for further directions. “For anything regarding safety and alignment, there’s a trade-off,” Jain told media Monday. “[Astra] didn’t quite meet the bar in terms of staying within scope and authorization, and how it communicates back to the user about the type of work it’s done.” As Jain went on, she noted that there’s an “extremely high bar” for their models, in terms of safety expectations, before it can be released to consumers. When did we first hear the term “chick flick”? Wikipedia suggests it was probably sometime in the late 1980s when movies like “Dirty Dancing,” “Beaches,” “Steel Magnolias” and “When Harry Met Sally” flooded the market. Something similar is going on in the theater now with plays like Bess Wohl’s “Liberation,” Jocelyn Bioh’s “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding,” Kimberly Belflower’s “John Proctor Is the Villain,” and Bioh’s “School Girls,” which preceded those other three titles by a few years and was quickly preceded by Sarah DeLappe’s “Wolves.” The big difference between chick flicks and these Preaching to the Sorority plays is substance. The movies are fluff; they’re about falling in love. The plays, on the other hand, are about women’s solidarity in the face of collective oppression. The plays also feature large female casts (by today’s standard) and the number of roles for men can be counted on one hand. Not that the guys don’t make their presence felt. The title “John Proctor Is the Villain” says it all. The first Broadway revival of “School Girls, or, the African Mean Girls Play” opened Monday at MTC’s Samuel J. As it awaits final approval of its settlement with 12 state attorneys general that will seal its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount Skydance is putting out a $44 billion debt offering to finance the industry-changing merger. The debt offering, which was filed with the SEC on Monday, includes $32 billion in investment-grade debt and $12.4 billion in high yield bonds. The proceeds from the debt offering will be combined with equity and term loan financing as well as cash on hand to fund the $110 billion purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery. The offering comes as Paramount Skydance awaits word from U.S. District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin on whether she will approve the settlement that the company made with California AG Rob Bonta that would clear the final regulatory hurdle for the merger. The judge declined to approve the settlement at a Sep. 24 hearing, instead allowing for a few days for oppositional amicus briefs to be filed by Monday.
