When John Boorman’s gonzo “Exorcist II: The Heretic” opened in 1977 as the sequel to William Friedkin’s original 1973 masterpiece, it was promptly pilloried by critics. (Gene Siskel, in his zero-star review, recounted how a man at his screening had playfully threatened Siskel’s life “if you say one nice thing about that lousy movie.” The man’s wife made sure the critic knew her husband was kidding.)
