Many people love the 2014 movie adaptation of Gone Girl. With start-studded performances from Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, and Ben Affleck. But in a recent interview on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen John Hamm revealed that he was actually supposed to play the role of Nick Dunne, the man who becomes under suspicion when his wife disappears instead of Ben Affleck. During a segment where guests answer questions via video chat, two fans asked John to confirm whether he was originally meant to star as Nick Dunne in the thriller, and the Mad Men actor confirmed he was. Though Jon Hamm nearly landed the role in the thriller, it’s hard to imagine it being anyone other than Ben Affleck. With his real-life experi ences with the negative press being the main reason he was cast, Ben was able to understand the role of Nick like no other. Director David Fincher shared that “I needed someone who understood the stakes of the kind of public scrutiny that Nick is subjected to and the absurdity of trying to resist public opinion. Ben knows that, not conceptually, but by experience.” Also adding “We knew we needed somebody who was charming and could be seductive, who could be a ladies’ man, a guy’s guy, a frat boy.” Which is a tall order for any actor. But with all of the success of Gone Girl, it’s safe to say that Affleck did an amazing job.
