Joe Manganiello shared insight into how his seven-year battle with a mysterious autoimmune disease, one doctors were never able to diagnose, shaped his outlook on life. Shortly after his marriage to Sofía in 2015, Manganiello began experiencing ulcers on his digestive tract, causing severe abdominal pain which left him unable to walk, in addition to fevers, blistering rashes, headaches and crippling fatigue. As he told People in an interview published Oct. 7, “I was getting sicker and sicker.” Joe’s illness also afftected his marriage to Sofia, as she told a Spanish newspaper that their marriage “broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids, and I didn’t want to be an old mom.” But Manganiello says he gave up the idea because of his illness. After failed IVF attempts led to them considering egg donors, he says he didn’t want to die and leave Vergara with a child “who wasn’t biologically hers.” Manganiello tried various holistic remedies. But it wasn’t until he met with a shaman in Santa Monica, who said generational trauma was to blame, that the Magic Mike actor felt any significant change.
