Stephen Colbert is reflecting on the end of an era as he prepares to say goodbye to CBS’ The Late Show after 11 seasons. Just days ahead of his final episode, airing May 21, the 62-year-old comedian opened up to People magazine in an interview published May 19 about leaving late night—and what comes next. Colbert revealed he’s surprisingly at peace with the decision, even questioning whether the network “saved my life” by canceling the show in July 2025. At the time, CBS called the move a “purely financial decision,” but Colbert now admits the daily grind took a major toll. “It takes a lot of bone marrow to do the show every day,” he shared, explaining that stepping away gives him the time and energy to explore new creative paths. As for what’s next, Colbert says he hasn’t fully figured it out yet, joking that his mindset feels similar to that of a college senior facing graduation. CBS has yet to reveal the final guest list, but Jon Stewart, Steven Spielberg, and Bruce Springsteen are set to appear leading up to the finale.
