Alysa Liu wins Olympic gold and makes history! On Feb. 19, the 20‑year‑old figure skating phenom brought home gold, officially ending a 24‑year U.S. medal drought in women’s singles figure skating. Liu’s victory marks the first time an American woman has medaled in the event since 2006, and the first gold since 2002. Competing in the women’s free skate, Liu delivered an electrifying performance set to Donna Summer’s iconic “MacArthur Park Suite.” Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto secured the silver medal, with teammate Ami Nakai taking bronze. Sasha Cohen was the last American woman to medal in the event, winning silver in 2006. Before her, Sarah Hughes claimed gold in 2002, and Michelle Kwan earned bronze.
